Japanese pork cutlet restaurant to leave B.C. with closure of its Metro Vancouver location

Restaurant closures have been on the rise in Metro Vancouver, and now another spot has announced that it will be closing its doors.
Located in Surrey, Mr. Tonkatsu took to Instagram to share the news.
“Since opening our doors in April 2019, we have been truly grateful for your incredible support. It has been an honour to serve you, and every meal shared has meant the world to us,” stated the restaurant. “With heavy hearts, we announce that we will be closing.”

Dished reached out to Mr. Tonkatsu to learn the reason for the closure. Instead of the standard reasons facing many Metro Vancouver restaurants — like rising rents and food costs — the owner of Mr. Tonkatsu shared that he has decided to close to spend time taking care of his sick mother in Korea.
He also shared that when the situation improves, he’d like to reopen again somewhere in B.C., but added that nothing is set in stone.

For those unfamiliar, Mr. Tonkatsu is best known for its tonkatsu, which is made with fresh ingredients, right down to the breadcrumbs made from freshly baked bread. Currently, Mr. Tonkatsu operates a handful of locations in Ontario, but this was its only location in B.C.
Mr. Tonkatsu’s final day is Sunday, March 9, so there is still time for one last meal before it closes.
