After an abandoned baby was found in Port Coquitlam over the weekend, Coquitlam RCMP said on Tuesday they believe they have now identified the infant’s mother.

The investigation began on Saturday afternoon, when police were called to a residence in the 2300 block of Ranger Lane in Port Coquitlam, just before 1 pm, for reports of an abandoned baby.

Upon their arrival, police found the baby “outside the door of a home.”

Now, Coquitlam RCMP said its major crime section has identified a Port Coquitlam woman who is believed to be the child’s mother.

“She does not have a history with police,” the detachment said. “This incident is isolated and there is no broader risk to the public.”

Police said that “as with all newborn infants, the child required medical care and supervision and was taken to hospital immediately. The baby is now recovering well.”

And with “the immediate medical needs of everyone involved now taken care of, Major Crime investigators will continue to gather statements and review physical and forensic evidence,” police said.
