All the Vancouver home cooks you'll see on the next season of 'MasterChef Canada'
Earlier this week, CTV revealed the lineup of home cooks that will be cooking on the ninth season of MasterChef Canada, and Vancouver has its fair share of participants.
The new season will air on CTV beginning Sept. 22 (and will be available for streaming the following day on Crave).
For those not in the know, the 11-episode season will have 16 Canadian home cooks competing for the chance to win a $100,000 cash prize and the title of MasterChef Canada champion. Each week will test these home cooks through a series of high-pressure and precision-focused challenges.
Throughout the show, the group of home cooks will be mentored by returning judges like Canadian Screen Award-winning host and Season 3 winner Mary Berg, internationally acclaimed chef and author Hugh Acheson, and chef-restaurateur Craig Wong.
Now that we’ve got the preliminary info out of the way, let’s dive into the Vancouver home cooks who will be competing on MasterChef Canada Season 9.
Filmmaker and DJ Harley Maranan will be among the participants. On Instagram, the show shared that the 26-year-old draws his inspiration from his Filipino roots and combines tradition and creativity to make bold, memorable dishes.

“This has been my dream since I was ten years old,” said Maranan. “I think I’m going to handle pressure pretty well. I mean, I’ve been in high-pressure situations before. I’ve worked in film. I work as a DJ as well. And I don’t think it’s going to be any different in the kitchen.”
The second Vancouverite to step into the kitchen will be Hekate, an Indigenous and trans entrepreneur and video game streamer. The show said that Hekate “brings a fresh perspective to comfort cooking, creating nostalgic dishes with rich flavours.”

“I think I’m going to be pretty good under pressure. I spent most of my life working in restaurants, which, as we all know, is very high pressure when you are a server/bartender,” said Hekate. “I’m competing because I really wanted to challenge myself and meet some new people.”
Finally, Jason Yamasaki will round out the Vancouver representation on the show. Yamasaki is a sommelier and lifelong food lover who the show describes as a home cook with a bit of a “wild side.”

“Anything that I take on, I take it on to the most usually unreasonable ends. My cooking style is making plates look beautiful, ready for wine pairing, and using traditional ingredients,” Yamasaki said. “I’ve been a home cook for the last 30 years of my life. I think I’m one of the best in Canada, and I wanted to put my skills to the test.”

In the Season 9 premiere, special guest chef and MasterChef judge Gordon Ramsay will task the 16 home cooks to cook his signature Beef Wellington dinner. While the strongest four will earn White Aprons and move on to the next round, the remaining cooks will have to tap into a core memory to create a dish inspired by a restaurant experience that sparked their passion for cooking. By the end of the episode, only 12 cooks will advance.
