The city’s comedy fans got more than they bargained for on Tuesday night as comedy behemoth Louis C.K. made a surprise appearance on the Vancouver circuit.

The comedian, who is best known for his self titled FX series, is in Vancouver this week, playing two shows at UBC’s Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre – the first of which is tonight, and the second takes place tomorrow.

But before he took to the stage for his sold out tour, the stand-up star surprised unsuspecting patrons at both The Comedy Mix, and the Kino Cafe, by showing up and giving the Tuesday night patrons a laugh.

“It was an awesome moment in the life of the Comedy Mix,” general manager Kelly Nielson told Daily Hive. “I received a call Tuesday morning from another famous comedian friend of the club, asking me if Joe List could do a guest spot that night as he was in town to open for Louis C.K.”

Nielson said yes, and then asked if Louis might be able to do a performance spot as well.

“He said he would ask and get back to me,” Nielson recalled. “Twenty minutes later I got a call back and was asked if I was sitting down. I was then told that Louis would like to do 30 mins or so and if that would be alright.”

The only caveat, Nielson added, would be that Comedy Mix would not be able to “advertise or promote the special guest appearance in any way.”

“I obviously said yes and that would not be a problem,” Nielson said. “As you can well imagine it was very hard to do so, but we prevailed.”

Having a comedian of that calibre was “a very big compliment to the club,” he added.

C.K. wasn’t scheduled to appear at either venue, so fans “were absolutely blown away when he walked out on stage,” Nielson said. “They couldn’t believe their eyes.”

Those in the crowd  took to social media to share the night’s big highlight.
