Time's running out to catch Vancouver’s last 8 p.m. sunset of 2025

Aug 28 2025, 6:23 pm

It’s official: the last 8 p.m. sunset Vancouver will see this year is just days away.

According to Time and Date, the sun will set at 8:02 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, and at exactly 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29.

Then, sunsets will start dipping into the 7 p.m. hour, with the day’s length shrinking noticeably as summer fades.

By Saturday, Aug. 30, sunset will already be 7:58 pm, and by Sept. 26, the sun will set around 7 pm.

The science of shorter days

This steady change is tied to the tilt of Earth’s axis.

As we head toward the autumnal equinox on Sept. 22 at 11:19 a.m., day and night will be nearly equal in length.

From there, evenings grow shorter until the clocks “fall back” an hour when Daylight Saving Time ends on the second Sunday of November.

The good news

The good news? Vancouver’s late-August skies are cooperating.

Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts a run of sunny and partly sunny days over the coming week, with highs in the mid-20s.

But the skies might be a little moody leading up to the last 8 p.m. sunset.

Thursday is mainly cloudy with highs near 23°C, and Friday carries a slight chance of showers with a high around 24°C.

After that, though, the weekend shapes up beautifully, clear skies and sunshine return Saturday through mid-next week, with highs in the mid-20s and even reaching 27°C on Tuesday.

So while Friday’s big sunset might be tucked behind a few clouds, the stretch of golden evenings that follow will be perfect for getting outside and soaking in those late-summer skies.

That means near-perfect conditions for enjoying the final golden evenings of summer.
