If the Vancouver heat wave has you bogged down, wait till you hear about how hot it got in one B.C. town yesterday.
Lytton is that blazing hot spot, which is technically a village, and yesterday it achieved a notable meteorological feat on a national level.
According to the weather summaries page on Environment and Climate Change Canada’s website, Lytton broke a record on Aug. 24 dating back to 1958. On Aug. 24, 1958, the village of just hundreds of people saw a high of 38.9˚C. Yesterday, it reached 40.3. Records in the area have been kept since 1921.
We confirmed some additional details with ECCC Senior Program Meteorologist Matt Loney, who said that yesterday’s record-breaking day for Lytton marks the hottest day Canada has seen in 2025.
The 40.3˚C that Lytton saw was the “number one temperature in Canada for the year,” Loney said.
He added that Lytton also has the second-highest spot, too, for when it reached 39.3˚C back in June of this year. Lytton is currently facing a heat warning, which states that temperatures are expected to reach between 37˚C and 39˚C this week. However, the seven-day forecast shows temperatures could reach a high of 40˚C today.

While 40.3˚C might feel scarily hot, in June 2021, the village was even hotter, reaching a staggering 49.6˚C, according to ECCC.
Over the past several years, Lytton, which is around a three-hour drive from Vancouver, has made headlines for unfortunate reasons. The first major story involving the small B.C. village dates back to July 1, 2021, when 90 per cent of the town was destroyed just a day after breaking a Canadian temperature record.
The saga is ongoing for some residents of Lytton, and as early as this year, there were law firms fighting for victims of the 2021 fire that devastated the area. The village is still in the process of being rebuilt.
Despite the issues it has been working through, the town continues to persevere and will be hosting Labour Day celebrations this upcoming long weekend.
Update:
Lytton has done it again. On Aug. 25, the village saw a high of 41.3˚C, making it the hottest day in Canada since the start of the year.
