With summer slipping away, there’s no better time to chase B.C. sunsets.
From sandy beaches to hidden jetties, here are some of the province’s most magical spots to watch the sky light up before the season fades.
1. A well-timed BC Ferries ride
Sometimes the best sunset views come when you’re not even on land.
Time your sailing from Tsawwassen or Horseshoe Bay so you’re on deck as the sun dips below the horizon. With the ocean stretched around you and silhouettes of Gulf Islands in the distance, it’s a moving picture you’ll never forget.
2. Stuart Lake
Up north near Fort St. James, Stuart Lake is a long, glacially carved body of water that points directly west. On clear evenings, the entire sky seems to funnel into one fiery vanishing point.
3. Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal
Even if you’re not boarding a ferry, the surrounding waterfront near Tsawwassen offers uninterrupted views across the Salish Sea. On warm evenings, the sky often bursts into colour just beyond the terminal.
4. Wreck Beach or English Bay
Vancouver’s iconic shoreline is tailor-made for sunsets. From Wreck Beach’s wild, sandy expanse to the buzz of English Bay, the city has a front-row seat to nightly sky shows.
5. The Hope-to-Vancouver drive
This one’s less of a destination and more of an experience. Leave Hope about 90 minutes before sunset and drive west along Highway 1. You’ll be following the sun the entire way, landing in Vancouver right as it dips below the Pacific. It’s a road trip moment made for playlists and car snacks.
6. Garry Point, Richmond
Located at the mouth of the Fraser River, Garry Point Park delivers wide-open skies and ocean views. It’s a favourite for kite flyers, dog walkers, and sunset chasers alike.
7. Lighthouse Park, West Vancouver
This forested gem ends with a rocky outcrop overlooking Burrard Inlet. Come for a late-afternoon hike, stay for the sweeping views as the sky melts into the sea.
Pro tip? Check the forecast before you go. Sunsets are at their most magical when clouds scatter light across the horizon, not just on clear-sky days.
