The Shane Homes YMCA had its ceremonial grand opening today, making Calgary home to the world’s largest YMCA.
At a staggering 284,000 square feet, the new facilities are located in northwest Calgary’s Rocky Ridge community, and the building is designed to blend seamlessly in with the surrounding landscape.
Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi was in Rocky Ridge on Thursday to celebrate the grand opening.
“I’m thrilled that this beautiful facility is now open for Calgarians,” Nenshi said in a release from the City of Calgary.
“The Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge is an important part of providing much-needed recreation opportunities in northwest Calgary, and it’s part of a larger commitment to provide amenities across Calgary to meet our growing city’s needs.”

The YMCA had a soft-open earlier this month, so Calgarians have already had a few weeks to try out all the new facilities, including (but definitely not limited to):
- a 25 meter, eight lane competition pool with viewing area
- leisure pool with a wave system and waterslide
- hot tub and steam room
- competition and leisure ice surfaces
- three full gymnasia
- a fitness centre and exercise studios
- a running track
- art-making studio space
- childcare and child-minding
- food services
- a 250-seat theatre
- a physiotherapy and medical clinic
- a unique self-serve library
The Shane Homes YMCA is only the third of four new recreational facilities planned for Calgary, with a total price tag of $480 million.
The building itself has become a popular spot among the city’s photographers, with its interesting architectural design and natural backdrop.
