When it comes to which sandwiches each province in Canada is known for, some are easier to guess than others. Take the Montreal-style smoked meat sandwich or the P.E.I. staple lobster roll. But when it comes to B.C., and more specifically Vancouver, the question of which sandwich we’re best known for is a bit more difficult.
However, TikToker Sandwich Dad may have given us the answer.
In his series dubbed “Sandwiches of Canada,” Sandwich Dad named Japadog the sandwich of Vancouver.
For those unfamiliar, Japadog has been around since 2005, serving up its Japanese take on hot dogs. Since then, it has operated multiple brick-and-mortar locations throughout Metro Vancouver, as well as multiple food carts.
Its most popular hot dog is the terimayo, which is a dog served with teriyaki sauce, Japanese mayo, fried onions, and seaweed. However, on its website, it lists over 34 varieties available.
Japadog is also well known for its Shaked Fries, so much so that it made our reader-recommended list of best fries in Vancouver.
@sandwichdad Sandwiches of Canada – Japadogs (Vancouver BC). I first tried Japadog shortly after they opened their first sit down place on Robson St in 2010 and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. Since then it’s become one of, if not the signature sandwich of Vancouver. I’m sad it took me 15 years to finally try to make one myself, but I’m delighted by the results and will be making the Terimayo dog much more often in the future. #japadog #sandwichesofcanada #vancouver #japanesehotdog #sandwichtiktok #sandwichesoftiktok #japanese #hotdog #recipe #fyp ♬ original sound – Sandwich Dad🇨🇦
However, this begs the question: is a hot dog a sandwich? Many people took to the comments of the post to partake in the debate.
“My wife and I have a heated debate about the validity of a hot dog as a sandwich. I say no, she says yes. So she sends me this video and say “see even the SANDWICH dad says it’s a sandwich,” said one user.
“A hot dog is not a sandwich. This is settled law,” said another.
“Hotdogs are Tacos!!!!,” said another, which Sandwich Dad responded to by saying that tacos were also considered a sandwich.
However, in his blog post about the sandwiches of Canada, he also included the smoked salmon benny as a sandwich of B.C., which we think is even less of a sandwich than a hot dog.
