Jun 6 2018, 10:58 pm

UPDATE: According to Coquitlam RCMP, the “gunfire” actually stemmed from firecrackers being lit up. Officers came across a case of used firecrackers during their investigation.

The ‘hold and secure’ applied to both elementary schools have been lifted.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Coquitlam RCMP are undergoing an extensive investigation after receiving multiple reports of gunshots at Hyde Creek in Port Coquitlam.

The reports were called in at approximately 4:30 am and police have remained on the scene since then.

According to the Coquitlam RCMP, police have not yet found any evidence of violence. No firearms, shells, or casing has been found at the scene. However, because it is near a residential area, officers are taking extreme caution.

Due to the size of the area, multiple officers are currently on scene to establish safety. Trail runners are currently being turned around and asked to avoid the area and residents in the area are being asked to remain in their homes.

Three schools are currently affected by the ongoing investigation. BC Christian Academy is on lockdown, although the lockdown was issued before classes began so there are currently no students inside.

Leigh Elementary and Minnekhada Elementary are currently under ‘hold and secure’ protocol.

The area being searched is bound by Victoria Drive to the north, Prairie Avenue to the south, Cedar Drive to the east, and Coast Meridian Drive to the west.
