Overnight closures on Highway 1 could impact Metro Vancouver drivers starting this week

A major transportation project in Metro Vancouver continues to progress, but closures for the next section of work could see late-night drivers and commuters impacted for several weeks.
The Government of B.C. announced today that overnight detours are planned for Highway 1 near the 264th Street interchange, as part of the widening and upgrade of the highway through the Lower Mainland.
The provincial highway will be closed in both directions overnight between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m., starting on Tuesday, Dec. 9, until Wednesday, Dec. 31.

“Highway 1 traffic in both directions will be detoured through the 264th Street interchange’s on and off ramps,” stated the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in a release.
“A total of 10 overnight closures are anticipated to occur within this timeframe, weather permitting. There will be no detours on the nights of Dec. 24 to 28.”

According to the ministry, the traffic-pattern change is necessary to allow the project’s contractor to install girders over the highway as part of bridge construction at the 264th Street interchange.
“These closures are in addition to regular, ongoing overnight lane closures that are needed for the continued safe construction of the 264th Street interchange, advancing the widening of Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley.”
Drivers are also asked to slow down and follow posted signs in the construction zones.

Work taking place over the next few weeks is part of improvements to a 21 km stretch of Highway 1 between the 264th Street Interchange in Langley and Highway 11 in Abbotsford.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said online that widening Highway 1 will enable it to add improvements like HOV/EV lanes both east and westbound, bus-on-shoulder lanes in each direction, truck climbing lanes, and a truck staging area.
The Government of B.C. has approved $2.34 billion in provincial funding for this section of the project.
