An appeal for information is underway after a tragic crash left a woman dead and two others hurt in Burnaby, and now the police watchdog has been called in.
Burnaby RCMP says the woman was the passenger of a Toyota Supra which crashed with a silver/grey Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck just before 5 am on Wednesday morning.
The woman was pronounced dead on scene.
The crash left the area around Hastings Street and Willingdon Avenue closed for hours and both vehicles’ drivers were sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
However, it appears the crash is connected to another incident reported in Vancouver that morning.
Investigators say the driver’s vehicle matches the description of one that was involved in a crash at Hastings and Abbott which left a taxi damaged. Luckily, the driver was not hurt.
Mounties are asking the public for any video of that pickup truck which was allegedly being driven at a high rate of speed from the crash site in Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood at around 4:45 am.

“The driver of the truck reportedly continued eastbound on Hastings Street towards Burnaby following the collision,” the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) said Friday.
The IIO says it received reports that the Silverado was subsequently involved in a collision with the Toyota Supra at the intersection of Hastings and Willingdon and a VPD officer might have observed the truck travelling at a high rate of speed between the two scenes.
“Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm what actions, if any, the officer took and whether they played any role in the second collision,” the IIO said.
