An authentic New York City-style Jewish deli is coming to Vancouver

Local celebrity chef Duran “Dman” Bodasing and Herschel Miedzygorski are teaming up to open what they’re calling Vancouver’s first proper New York City Jewish deli.

“HELLO VANCOUVER BC WE ARE HERSCHEL’S DELI AND SCHMEER!! Get ready for some New York City Jewish Deli Soul Vibes with a kick of Canadian style,” wrote Bodasing on his Instagram.

The new shop will be opening at the entrance of Granville Island at 1500 W. 2nd Ave., the former home of Tru Cafe. Here, the team will be serving up NYC-style bagels that are hand-rolled, boiled, and baked fresh daily. Expect varieties from your standard plain to cinnamon raisin, Asiago cheese, pumpernickel, and more.

As for sandwiches, you’ll find classic options like Lox and Schmeer (smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onion, capers, cucumber, tomato, and lemon) and the BEC on Everything (fried egg, crispy bacon, aged cheddar, arugula, tomato, and herb aioli). The shop will also be serving a variety of cafe favourites like drip coffee and lattes.

“The party is just getting started at the entrance to our beloved Granville Island in the heart of Kitsilano,” added Bodasing.

Bodasing is a local celebrity chef and TV personality best known for The Dome Cooking Show, where he cooks dishes inspired by his travels with B.C. produce in his dome-shaped penthouse. He is also preparing to launch The Cheeseburger Show — a show where he will interview celebrity guests and create their cheeseburgers with the help of guest chefs.

As for Miedzygorski, you may know him best as the former owner of Harry’s on Robson, Harry’s Diner on Pender, and Kitchen on Main St. (which he ran alongside Uli Schnur). He was also behind Whistler-based Southside Delicatessen, which operated from 1984 until 2003.

An exact opening date for Herschel’s Deli has yet to be announced. Be sure to check back here for more details soon.
