Phone chargers recalled due to overheating causing fire, electric shock

Health Canada has issued a recall for a Belkin phone charger and its stand due to overheating, posing fire and electric shock hazards.

According to the February 11 recall, the item, Belkin Portable Wireless Charger and Stand Special Edition, poses as a fire hazard due to a manufacturing defect in the power supply which can cause it to malfunction and overheat.

Those who have the product are asked to stop using it and to return it to Belkin for a full refund.

The company has reported that 221 units were sold in Canada from July 2020 to October 2020.

“As of January 26, 2021, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada,” said Health Canada.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled portable wireless chargers and contact Belkin for instructions on safe disposal, and for a full refund.”

Health Canada notes that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits recalled products from being redistributed, sold, or even given away in Canada.

To report any health or safety incidents related to the use of this product or any other consumer product or cosmetic, Health Canada asks Canadians to fill out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.
