Health Canada has issued a recall for a brand of smoked salmon because it may contain a harmful bacteria.

The health authority is warning that One Ocean brand Sliced Smoked Wild Sockeye Salmon may be contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes, the germ that causes listeriosis.

According to the February 10 recall, the 300 gram packages were sold throughout British Columbia.

Anyone who purchased the affected products is advised to throw them away or return them to the store where they were bought.

Health Canada notes that food that has been contaminated by the bacteria may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make you sick.

Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

Pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
