Massive 'GO CANADA!' message embedded next to Vancouver International Airport's runway ahead of FIFA World Cup

Air travellers arriving at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) are being greeted with a bold message of national pride as the City of Vancouver gears up to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A massive “GO CANADA!” display has been carved into a grassy field immediately adjacent to YVR’s North Runway, creating a striking visual from the air for passengers flying into Vancouver.

The North Runway is typically used for arrivals, with planes flying from east to west for their approach to the airport. The patriotic message is located near the centre of the runway — directly north of the new Pier D international terminal wing.

This latest installation is clearly part of growing efforts to build excitement ahead of the world’s largest sporting event.
B.C. tourism, arts, culture, and sport minister Anne Kang shared aerial footage of the display on her social media, describing it as a message to the world ahead of the tournament.
“Flying over YVR and caught their message to the world ahead of the FIFA World Cup,” Kang wrote in an Instagram post.
“Exciting to see Vancouver getting ready to welcome fans from around the globe. The countdown is on, and our province is ready to shine on the world stage.”
As well, on Tuesday, a giant Canadian flag was unfurled atop Grouse Mountain, where it was draped across a ski slope and can be seen from across Metro Vancouver. Grouse Mountain Resort told Daily Hive Urbanized they will have a formal announcement about this installation on Wednesday morning.

Downtown Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium is hosting seven matches on June 13, 18, 21, 24, and 26 and July 2, with the first five matches being group stage matches and the final two matches being knockout matches — a round of 16 and a round of 32.
Canada will play two matches in Vancouver — against Qatar on June 18 and against Switzerland on June 24.
Major festivities are also planned throughout the five-week-long tournament period, including the free official FIFA Fan Festival at the PNE fairgrounds in Hastings Park.
