Vancouver is really starting to look like a FIFA World Cup host city

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup now under one month away, Vancouver is increasingly beginning to look the part of a host city. It is now impossible to miss.
Over the last few weeks, and accelerating this week especially, official FIFA World Cup branding, signage, and other decorative installations are now emerging in highly visible public spaces, transforming everyday commuter routes and civic landmarks into reminders that the world’s largest single sporting event is fast approaching.

Outside SkyTrain’s YVR-Airport Station, a new multi-storey high FIFA World Cup Vancouver sign now spans the station structure’s glass exterior, greeting arriving visitors immediately upon exiting Vancouver International Airport and stepping onto the Canada Line.
Prominent banners celebrating the tournament have also been applied onto the columns inside the historic CPR station building of the Waterfront Station public transit hub.
Inside SkyTrain’s Main Street-Science World Station, official tournament graphics and wayfinding elements have also appeared to direct passengers to the official and only walking route to BC Place Stadium’s entrance. And at SkyTrain’s 29th Avenue Station, there is now wayfinding signage for the bus stops to board TransLink’s special Renfrew Street shuttle bus route to reach the FIFA Fan Festival at the PNE in Hastings Park.

Along the pedestrian pathway and bike lane on the eastern side of Creekside Park, just north of Science World, the concrete obelisk-shaped light fixtures have now been covered with tournament branding.
Nearby, massive branded wraps now cover the columns beneath the Georgia Viaduct — visible from Pacific Boulevard.
Crews today were also spotted installing the base foundation for decorations to cover a SkyTrain column at the intersection of Quebec Street and Terminal, outside Science World.

Perhaps the most striking temporary change is unfolding at Science World, where the landmark geodesic dome is in the process of being converted into a giant soccer ball — an unmistakable symbol that Vancouver’s FIFA World Cup era has arrived.
Science World’s soccer ball-themed dome transformation was first publicly announced on May 5, and work the installation began immediately after.
As of today, a crew of rope access technicians — the same type of highly specialized professionals who cleaned and repaired the dome’s exterior and installed a brand new lighting system with 651 programmable LED lights in 2023 — have completed roughly one-third of the replica of the adidas Trionda, which is the official name of the 2026 FIFA World Cup playing soccer ball.

The 360-degree, 40-metre-diameter installation, called “The Beautiful Dome,” is not applied to the reflective silver steel surface of the dome directly. Rather, these are hexagon-shaped banners that are carefully attached to the external structural system that supports the geodesic dome, which leaves an air space below the structure’s surface. The installation is expected to reach full completion by early June.
The soccer-themed transformation is especially fitting for Science World not only because it reimagines one of the host city’s most recognizable landmarks, but also because of the venue’s direct role in the FIFA World Cup festivities.
Science World will host the Soccer & Technology exhibit from the FIFA Museum in Zurich, Switzerland, with the exhibit opening on May 15 and running through Sept. 7, 2026.
Science World also serves as the visual gateway to the official and sole pedestrian route to BC Place Stadium during the tournament. This secure, official route begins outside Main Street-Science World Station and follows Quebec Street and Pacific Boulevard to the stadium entrance. This is also why columns and other fixtures along the corridor throughout the area are receiving a soccer-themed makeover.

As previously reported by Daily Hive Urbanized, 2,900 FIFA-branded street banners are being installed along major roadways and busy pedestrian thoroughfares across Vancouver.
Some of the first tournament-time, FIFA-branded decorations were installed on the vacant storefronts of the former Hudson’s Bay building in February 2026, while an official countdown clock has existed at Terry Fox Plaza outside BC Place Stadium since June 2025.
High concentrations of decorations and signage can be expected across in and around the downtown Vancouver peninsula, especially near BC Place Stadium, and around Hastings Park for the fan festival, and near the official practice facilities at Killarney Park and Thunderbird Fields at the University of British Columbia.
Over the coming weeks, just ahead of the FIFA World Cup, a permanent giant three-dimension “VANCOUVER” civic pride letter sign will also be installed at the entrance plaza into Canada Place. But this installation is not directly related to the tournament.
