Colourful soccer ball art installation above Robson Square celebrates FIFA World Cup nations playing in Vancouver

A new temporary public art installation hovering high above the street plaza at Robson Square playfully celebrates Vancouver’s role as a 2026 FIFA World Cup host city.
Suspended directly above the busy pedestrian thoroughfare, a series of oversized soccer balls now hang over the plaza, providing a FIFA World Cup visual layover to one of the city’s most recognizable public spaces.

“Soccerscape,” the name of the installation, is the plaza’s latest suspended temporary public art piece commissioned by Downtown Van (the local business improvement association for Downtown Vancouver).
There are a total of roughly three dozen varying sized balls — some designed as black-and-white soccer balls, but others providing a nod to the tournament’s three host nations of Canada, the United States, and Mexico, and the seven visiting national teams confirmed to play at BC Place Stadium during the group stage matches (Australia, Turkey, Qatar, New Zealand, Egypt, Switzerland, and Belgium).
The country balls feature the nation’s name abreviation and national flag-inspired colours across their surfaces.

Installed at different heights above the plaza, the artwork creates shifting sightlines for pedestrians moving through the area, and moving shadows of the plaza surface.
Additionally, temporary seating installations that take the shape of a soccer ball can now be found in the plaza.
While this is a soccer-themed installation, this is not be confused for the extensive official tournament-time, FIFA-branded decorations, wayfinding, and signage being installed across major streets, busy corridors, public transit hubs, prominent public spaces, and landmarks across the city.

This includes a ginormous soccer ball-themed transformation of the iconic geodesic dome of Science World, with rope access technicians working to install temporary banner panels on the entire dome structure to replicate the adidas Trionda, which is the official name of the 2026 FIFA World Cup playing soccer ball. The installation work for “The Beautiful Dome” will reach completion in early June, just in time for the start of the tournament.
Over the coming weeks, just ahead of the FIFA World Cup, a permanent giant three-dimensional “VANCOUVER” civic pride letter sign will also be installed at the entrance plaza into Canada Place. But this installation is not directly related to the tournament.
