Fairgrounds Public Racket Club is gearing up to open a massive pickleball facility inside Capilano Mall in North Vancouver.

The sporting destination, located at the former Sears site, is described by Fairgrounds as the largest pickleball facility in Vancouver.

“Expanding to Vancouver represents an exciting next chapter for Fairgrounds,” said Drummond Munro, co-founder of Fairgrounds, in a release. “We believe in the power of racket sports to create meaningful connections, support wellness, and bring people together across generations.

“Capilano Mall’s dynamic community and the incredible energy of the North Shore make it the perfect home for our first Vancouver location.”

Fairgrounds was initially set to open in Vancouver’s Pacific Centre in 2024, but the facility was cancelled before its launch.

The flagship location, situated inside the former North Shore Bike Park, will feature 15 indoor pickleball courts, a lounge, and a café offering food and drinks.

Visitors can also sign up for league play, coaching and clinics, member mixers, and pickleball parties. A curated lineup of paddles, apparel, and lifestyle gear will also be available for purchase.

An exact opening date has not yet been announced by Fairgrounds.

Emily Kim, General Manager at Capilano Mall, said that Quadreal Property Group, the mall’s owners, is always on the lookout for ways to build spaces that bring the community together.

“Fairgrounds is an ideal partner in that vision,” she added. “Their vibrant, community-first approach to athletics not only activates Capilano Mall in new and exciting ways, but also creates memorable experiences for North Shore residents — a place to connect, stay active, and have fun year-round.”

According to Fairgrounds, pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in North America. Similar to tennis, table tennis, and badminton, the sport is played with a racquet and a ball, both indoors and outdoors.

Metro Vancouver players can also get their game on at the Inclusive Place of Pickleball (IPOP) at the old Safeway at The City of Lougheed in Burnaby, or at one of the several free outdoor pickleball courts around the region.
