BC's largest indoor bike park is closing its doors in North Vancouver

North Shore Bike Park, the province’s biggest indoor bike playground, is closing its massive location at Capilano Mall next month.
Mountain bikers, skaters, BMXers, and more are mourning the impending loss of the 65,000 sq ft space used by enthusiasts of all ages.
According to the owners of the indoor biking attraction located in the massive former Sears department store space, the unexpected news is shared “with immense regret.”

“Our beloved facility, which has been a welcomed new home for active families, passionate athletes, and a thriving biking/skating & roller skating community, will close on March 30th at 10 pm,” said North Shore Bike Park on social media and its website.
“We deeply value the North Shore community and have been honoured to provide families with a local and well-loved indoor recreational facility. Because of this, we want to be transparent and share this information as soon as possible, even as the timeline continues to evolve. We will provide details on our web site shortly.”

North Shore Bike Park had only recently completed a new Foam Pit, reorganized the Airbag Zone and added new terrain to its facility. It will still be hosting its Spring Break Camps, which still has a few open spaces for participants.
The biking attraction originally opened in the summer of 2023 and was spearheaded and privately funded by 10 North Shore residents who are avid cyclists.
Construction on the wooden structures within the department store floor with 15-ft-high ceilings began in late 2022, providing the space with its first long-term use following Sears’ closure in early 2018.
No reasons for the closure have been announced, and the bike park will provide information on refunds and other options in the near future.

The North Shore of Metro Vancouver could see its largest high-rise tower development at the site of Capilano Mall in the City of North Vancouver.
Quadreal Property Group has now revealed its preliminary draft concept for how its proposed redevelopment of the 16.5-acre indoor mall shopping complex could look.
As can be expected, the existing complex, first built in 1967 (with further expansions in 1974, 1986, and 2001), would see a phased demolition and redevelopment into a mixed-use district with residential being the overwhelming primary use.
For the redevelopment, there would not be a new replacement indoor mall, as the focus will be creating new ground-level retail/restaurant uses that activate the street frontages of Marine Drive, some new internal roads, and 3rd Street West. The envisioned commercial uses include retail, restaurant, brewery spaces, bakeries, artist studios, and creative services.

Supporters and visitors of North Shore Bike Park shared their sadness about the upcoming closure.
“The way my daughter’s face fell today when I told her nearly broke my heart,” said one commenter. “It’s been such a hub for a growing community.”
“Terrible news,” added another person. “You guys provide a much-needed service to the community. Hopefully, this is just one door closing and another opening. You’ve got our support.”

Though North Shore Bike Park is “heartbroken” by its announcement, the ride is not over just yet.
“We are actively looking for a new location and exploring every possible avenue to keep this community alive. We need your support now more than ever. If you or someone you know has leads on potential new locations or wants to help advocate for us, please reach out.
“We also want to express our deepest gratitude to our incredible staff, volunteers, and community members who have made North Shore Bike Park such a special place. Your passion and dedication have built an amazing community, and we are incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received since opening.”
