Fire crews were called to Metropolis at Metrotown in response to a second-alarm fire that broke out on Friday morning.
Greg Young, Assistant Fire Chief for the Burnaby Fire Department, tells Daily Hive that the call came in at approximately 4:17 am.

“The fire was in a retail unit that was under renovation,” he says. “There was construction material that was burning, I believe it was expansion joint material.”
Young says that 30 members of the fire crew responded. He notes that it was “very small, but a smouldering fire that produced a lot of smoke.”
The fire took place on the mall’s main floor, so more issues came from dealing with the smoke in a common space than with the fire itself.
“It’s a very large space, so we were ventilating with gas fans to remove the smoke,” Young explains.
Metropolis at Metrotown is open to the public from 10 am to 9 pm on Fridays.
