New Vancouver eatery opens in iconic Davie Village restaurant space
Over the years, the restaurant space at 1202 Davie St., Vancouver, has seen plenty of change.
In 1979, it was home to Hamburger Mary’s, the restaurant founded by a local Drag Queen named “Mrs. G.” For decades, the eatery had been a go-to restaurant for the West End’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community and later changed its name to Mary’s on Davie.
Unfortunately, in 2024, the restaurant closed its doors and quickly following that, a new Mexican spot called Barra Gitano (from the same folks behind Flying Pig and Ophelia) opened in its place.
Now, less than two years later, Barra Gitano has also closed its doors, and a new restaurant has taken its place called Davie Social.
“Davie Social was created as a place to bring people together, where community is built, conversations unfold, and ideas are born. Rooted in the heart of Davie Village, we draw inspiration from the energy, diversity, and creativity of the neighbourhood we call home,” wrote the new restaurant on its website.

Davie Social offers a selection of breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner options that are described as Mexican-Canadian fusion. Expect an assortment of tacos alongside bites like steak frites, fish and chips, a smash burger, and more.
“Through thoughtfully crafted dishes, handcrafted cocktails, and a welcoming, design-forward atmosphere, we create space for connection between friends, neighbours, and new faces alike. Paired with warm, attentive hospitality, every detail is considered so that each visit feels effortless,” added the restaurant.
“Whether you’re joining us for a casual brunch or settling in for an evening out, Davie Social is a place to gather, linger, and feel part of something shared.”
Davie Social is currently open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
