CRAFT Beer Market at Olympic Village proposes building a new patio

An unused outdoor space on the north side of the CRAFT Beer Market building at Vancouver’s Olympic Village could finally be used for its intended purpose as a patio.

The restaurant has submitted a development application to the municipal government to construct a significant patio facing north towards Milton Wong Plaza.

According to the application designed by Fort Architecture, the proposal entails an added operational floor area of about 1,207 sq. ft., increasing the restaurant’s capacity by about 68 seats.

The restaurant’s indoor space and partial outdoor space already have a combined capacity for about 400 seats, with this proposed patio being an expansion of the existing canopy-covered patio.

This is intended to be a seasonal patio; operational hours are set at between 11 am and 11 pm for Monday to Friday, and 10 am to 11 pm for Saturday and Sunday. No speakers will be allowed on the patio due to the neighbouring residences.

The restaurant occupies 13,000 sq. ft. of space within the historic Salt Building, which was built in 1931 by Vancouver Salt Co. for their salt processing business.

Although the shoreline is now located approximately 200 metres north, the structure was originally constructed on 155 piles over water, as the location was previously sitting on the extent of the shoreline of False Creek before infill.

Extensive renovations were completed on the building in the late 2000s as part of the original Olympic Village project, with the building becoming a community hub for athletes during the 2010 Winter Games. Glassed-in walls in the newly created basement showcase the original pillars of the building.

Following a post-Games conversion, CRAFT Beer Market opened at the building in 2013.

The potential new addition, the expanded patio, could provide the adjacent plaza with some activation.

The chain is now in the process of renovating the former The Boathouse location on Beach Avenue in downtown’s West End for its second location in Vancouver. They previously set a target opening date for 2020; it is not immediately clear whether the current economic conditions and health safety restrictions will have an impact.
