The Vancouver Park Board is expected to approve a request from organizers of the Honda Celebration of Light to move its Sunset Beach Festival zone to Ceperley Meadow next to Second Beach in Stanley Park.

This would entail the relocation of live music entertainment on the LG104.3 main stage, food and beverage services, sponsor activations, picnic tables, cultural programming, and children’s play areas to the open grassy field. There will also be amenities such as a bike valet, baby change tent, stroller valet, and portable washrooms.

Organizers say the move to Ceperley Meadow would place the festivities within more optimal sightlines of the fireworks and allow the festival to use a newly installed event power kiosk at the location.

“Tying into this new power source will lower overall event delivery costs and contribute to a more sustainable and greener event,” reads a City staff report. “The relocation to Ceperley would also reduce festival impacts to residents adjacent to the previous Sunset Beach Park site.”

Additionally, organizers will be seeking approval to serve liquor on the three fireworks nights from 2 pm to 9 pm. The free all-ages festival zone area at Ceperley Meadow will have a maximum capacity of 5,000 people.

“The proposal submitted by the event organizer represents an attempt to build on the Festival’s successful activations and proactively address an under performing component of the event,” the report continues.

However, there are no plans to reposition the fireworks barge or relocate the other stage, festivities, and activities traditionally held at English Bay Beach.

This year’s participating countries are Japan (Saturday, July 29), United Kingdom (Wednesday, August 2), and Canada (Saturday, August 5). Fireworks go off at 10 pm rain or shine.

Park Board commissioners are scheduled to consider the Ceperley Meadow proposal during a meeting on Monday, May 15. Ceperly Meadow is also home to the summer-long free outdoor movie screenings.
