Elias Pettersson played his best game in a while last night, but that hasn’t taken the Vancouver Canucks star’s name out of trade talks.
The Canucks are listening to trade offers for their franchise centre, according to Elite Prospects’ Cam Robinson.
The Swedish star was almost traded to the Carolina Hurricanes earlier this season. A public feud between himself and co-star J.T. Miller meant one of them had to go, and it was up in the air who it would be.
Eventually, the Canucks traded Miller and reportedly took Pettersson off the trade market. However, they were close to trading Pettersson, and it seems they’re listening again. Postmedia’s Patrick Johnston also reported that the door isn’t closed on a Pettersson trade.Ā
Pettersson is in the midst of the worst season of his career. He has just 11 goals and 34 points in 55 games. That’s a steep drop from his production over the past two years over which he scored 191 points in 162 games.
This is also the first year of Pettersson’s massive $11.6 million per season contract. It runs for seven more years after this one, and he has a no-movement clause, which kicks in on July 1, meaning that if the Canucks want to get out of the deal, trading him at this deadline is their best option.
I'm hearing that Vancouver is once again listening on Elias Pettersson ahead of tomorrow's deadline.

Despite his struggles this year, Pettersson would still return a massive package. He’s shown he can be an elite 100-point, two-way contributor and one of the best players in the world when on his game.
The 26-year-old is still a prized asset, but many more risks come with him after such a poor season this year.
Recently, he took accountability for his poor play to the media and head coach Rick Tocchet says he’s seen improved habits over the past few days. Pettersson played a strong game — although he had zero points — last night, but whether this is the start of better play remains to be seen.
The Canucks started their deadline dealing today by trading Carson Soucy to the New York Rangers for a third-round pick. More deals are expected to come before tomorrow’s trade deadline, possibly involving Pettersson, Brock Boeser, Derek Forbort, Pius Suter, or other pieces.
