Vancouver Canucks are trying to trade Boeser but they don't like the offers: report

The Vancouver Canucks are waiting for dominoes to fall before giving away their star trade piece.

Pending free agent Brock Boeser is one of the top goal-scorers on the trade market at this year’s deadline. He scored 40 goals last season and has a respectable 18 in 54 games across this campaign, despite his team facing plenty of adversity.

The Canucks and Boeser have been unable to agree on a new contract, primarily disagreeing over the term of such a deal per reportsHe rejected a $40-million offer, and thus, the Canucks are likely to trade him before tomorrow’s deadline.

It’s a seller’s market in the NHL right now, and a player of Boeser’s calibre should fetch a strong return. However, the Canucks have not been impressed by the offers thus far and are therefore waiting for some bigger names to move before dealing Boeser per Elite Prospects’ Cam Robinson.

The big fish on the market is Mikko Rantanen, who moved from the Colorado Avalanche to the Carolina Hurricanes earlier this year. The perennial 100-point winger is available via trade again, and plenty of teams are crafting offers. Once a decision is made on Rantanen, either via another trade or the Hurricanes taking him off the market, teams who missed out will have to move on to secondary options like Boeser.

Boeser spoke yesterday ahead of what might’ve been his final game as a Canuck. He reiterated his love for the city and his teammates, but with no contract seemingly coming before the deadline, the chance he will be moved is high.

Any acquiring team could use him as a rental for their playoff run. He’s proven in the past that he can step up his game in the postseason. Additionally, they could then negotiate an extension if they wished to do so. Boeser’s current cap hit is $6.65 million, and while he’ll get a raise, the more contentious part of any negotiation will be the term of the contract.

The Canucks are not looking to get significantly worse at this deadline, per multiple reports. Therefore, it’s likely they’d want an NHL player with term involved in any return instead of the classic package of prospects and draft picks. If they did receive future assets, it’s likely the Canucks would flip them for something more valuable today before the deadline has passed.

The deadline is tomorrow at noon PST. Boeser isn’t the only Canucks player likely to be moved as pending free agents Pius Suter and Derek Forbort are also in play. The Canucks have also been getting calls on Carson Soucy, per Darren Dreger today.
