Vancouver Canucks trade Soucy to New York and Miller helped make it happen

The Vancouver Canucks have made their first move of trade deadline week.

But will it be their last?

Carson Soucy is heading to the New York Rangers in exchange for a third-round draft pick. The trade is now official, after first being reported by TSN’s Darren Dreger.

The Canucks are receiving San Jose’s 2025 third-round pick, acquired by the Rangers earlier in the day, in return.

Soucy had been in trade rumours for weeks, despite having a no-trade clause in his contract.

The big blueliner agreed to waive his no-trade clause, reportedly after some encouragement from J.T. Miller, who he’ll be joining on the Rangers.

“J.T. Miller called Soucy and made the Big Apple pitch to him,” said CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal.

Soucy was seemingly a perfect fit on Vancouver’s blue line last year, but the 6-foot-5 defenceman has struggled mightily this season.

Entering the season as a second-pair defenceman alongside Tyler Myers, Soucy has fallen down the depth in the time chart since. The 30-year-old has been a healthy scratch multiple times and has averaged just 14:21 of ice time in his last 10 games.

“Carson was a big part of our success last season, helping our group take a positive step forward in the right direction,” said Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin. “He is a true professional both on and off the ice and we wish him nothing but the best in New York.”

The move clears cap space for the Canucks, as Soucy is set to earn $3.25 million next season. Time will tell if they use the third-round pick in June or if they flip it for immediate help. The NHL’s trade deadline is set for noon on Friday.
