Vancouver Canucks shut down Pettersson trade market: report

The Vancouver Canucks have allegedly taken one of the NHL’s most sought-after trade pieces off the market.

The club is no longer interested in trading centre Elias Pettersson, per Elite Prospects’ Cam Robinson. Pettersson has been the target of many teams this season as a feud with former co-star J.T. Miller went public, forcing the Canucks to trade one of the two.

The Canucks traded Miller to the New York Rangers, ending a drama that had spanned multiple seasons. They got Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and a first-round pick in return. More important than any player that came back in that deal was the impact it could have on Pettersson, who hasn’t reached his peak in a full calendar year.

During the 2022-23 season, Pettersson scored 102 points and looked like one of the best and brightest young forwards in the league. Last year, he got off to a hot start and was one of the NHL’s top scorers for a portion of the season. However, from February 2024 on, he’s been incredibly average, including a terrible playoff run where he scored just one goal and had six points in 13 games.

Everyone across the hockey world knows Pettersson’s ceiling is sky-high, and that is why the Canucks had several teams interested after putting him on the trade block this year. Reportedly, they nearly completed a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes, which would’ve surely returned a massive package.

For those who hoped Pettersson would thrive after Miller was traded, that hasn’t been the case. The Swedish forward has just two points, both assists, in five games since the blockbuster deal. However, there have been a few positive signs, including a beautiful assist last game in a big 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The NHL’s trade deadline is on March 7, and the Canucks are expected to be players. They’ve already made two big trades, the Miller one and another acquiring Marcus Pettersson, but they might not be done yet as their management group is always looking to upgrade. If the Canucks do make another trade, just don’t expect it to involve Pettersson, as they’ve seemingly pulled him from talks.
