A new look at the station layouts of the Broadway Subway (RENDERINGS)
Late last year, the provincial government provided detailed preliminary architectural renderings of the six new subway stations that will be built for SkyTrain’s Millennium Line Broadway Station.
And now, architectural schematics and preliminary conceptual renderings of the interior of the stations have also been made publicly available, which show in great detail the layout of the circulation and platform spaces.

As noted previously, every level of the stations will be linked by elevators, staircases, and both up and down escalators.
All stations have a concourse level — the middle level between the street entrance and the platform level — for the circulation space needed to accommodate passenger flows moving in and out of the station. The concourse levels vary in size, but the largest appear to be at Broadway-City Hall Station and Arbutus Station.
Apart from South Granville Station, the fare gates of most stations are located on the ground level, near the entrance.
Every station has a commercial retail unit, with all six units totalling over 3,300 sq. ft. of leasable space.
Space is set aside at Arbutus Station and Broadway-City Hall Station for future public washrooms, when funding is made available for the outfit of the washrooms and their operation.
Secured bike parkades are planned for Arbutus Station and Great Northern Way Station. Most stations will also have some space for Transit Police, including a full hub office presence at Broadway-City Hall Station.
As a major interchange transfer point, the Canada Line’s existing Broadway-City Hall Station will be fully integrated to the Millennium Line’s new station, with underground corridors directly linking the Canada Line platform levels to the Millennium Line platforms.

As was to be expected, each station will have one main street entrance and at least one secondary street entrance for emergency uses only, typically located on the far side of the station away from the main entrance. Broadway-City Hall Station will depend on the existing street entrance built for the Canada Line, but the design of the Millennium Line expansion is designed to allow for a future secondary street entrance.
This subway is a seamless continuation of the Millennium Line system, which means all platforms will follow a platform length standard of at least 80 metres. Each station will have centre platforms.
The structural bones that form the layouts and features of the stations are essentially finalized, and the detailed station designs that show the interior finishings will be released to the public this spring for a final round of public consultation.
Demolition work at station sites began last month, and major construction on the project will begin this summer. Tunnel boring construction using twin machines, travelling westward from Great Northern Way-Emily Carr Station, will begin next year.
The six-km-long, $2.8-billion extension of the Millennium Line is expected to open in 2025. It will be a roughly 11-minute train ride from Commercial-Broadway Station to Arbutus Station, where passengers will board the truncated 99 B-Line (RapidBus) at a new bus loop for the remaining journey to the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus.
Crossover track switches for the reversal of trains at Arbutus Station are located on the east side of the station to allow for uninterrupted operations for the future construction of the extension reaching UBC.
The project’s contractor is a consortium led by European-based engineering firms Acciona and Ghella, with the local offices of DIALOG and IBI Group performing station architectural design services.
