BC health officials have announced 683 new test-positive COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the provincially recorded total to 51,983.

In a live update, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said that by specific health region, this equates to 105 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 447 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 11 in the Island Health region, 64 in the Interior Health region, and 36 in the Northern Health region.

There are currently 7,803 active cases of coronavirus in the province. There are 374 individuals currently hospitalized with COVID-19, 76 of whom are in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.

Additionally, 9,364 people are under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases, and there have been eight new COVID-19-related deaths.

During Wednesday’s COVID-19 update, Henry also announced a new Public Health Order banning liquor sales at bars, restaurants, and retail stores from 8 pm on New Year’s Eve to 9 am on New Year’s Day. The order is meant to curb New Year’s Eve parties and associated COVID-19 transmission.
