A popular B.C. shoe store is closing up shop after nearly 60 years in operation, and fans are sharing their sadness about the news online.

Victoria-based Baggins Shoes posted the news on social media, stating that it had made the “tough call” to close down before the end of 2026.

According to the public announcement, the decision wasn’t made lightly, but it was the “right call to make.”

“Between continuous challenges with economic circumstances and changes in our owners’ personal lives, it’s time to close,” said Baggins Shoes online.

“We’re choosing to go out in style, as always.”

Baggins was founded in 1969 by Glen Lynch, and grew to become a top retailer of Converse, while adding additional brands like Vans, Herschel, and Stance.

Though it previously closed its brick-and-mortar shoe store on Johnson Street in Victoria in 2024, it continued serving its customers through its online store and Custom Printshop based in a warehouse on Wilson Street.

Dozens of comments filled Baggins’ announcement with messages of support and memories about the shoe store.

“I was there at the very beginning when Glen had his first store in Bastion Square,” said one commenter. “This dream has lasted and changed and grown and become a household name for one of the best stores around. Sorry that era has come to an end, but what a story, what a legacy, and I’m so proud to be even the tiniest involved at the beginning.”

“My husband still wears the leather belt I bought him at Baggins in 1973,” added another. “Many visits to Baggins as a teen in Victoria; it was the place to be.”

“I’m gonna cry,” shared another longtime customer. “Been going to Baggins to look at the shoes after I busked for so much of my childhood and since the old paperbox location. Gonna miss y’all.”

Baggins thanked all of its fans and encouraged everyone to come down and shop one more time during its warehouse sales before it closes for good.

“Thank you so much for 57 incredible years of business. We’re honored to have seen generations of your families grow, to have been part of your daily lives, your back-to-school rituals, your must-see travel shop.”
