Your donations helped save Vancouver Aquarium's Marine Mammal Rescue Centre

Wow. Just, wow.

Together, in under 48 hours, over $157,000 was collectively raised to save the Vancouver Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Rescue Centre!

Over 1,200 people came together to emphatically say with their donations that an institution with a 60-year legacy of rescuing thousands of ocean animals was worth saving.

And, now, because of all of you, the more than 100 seal pups expected to require urgent medical attention this summer and fall will receive the treatment and care that they need.

On behalf of Ocean Wise, the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre and the entire Team at Daily Hive, I want to thank all of you for helping us smash our $125,000 goal! The Rescue Centre’s doors are reopening. And, that’s because of all of you!

And, as a thank you to all of you, the Centre has offered a seal pup for you to name!

“We thought it would be fitting, to thank the Daily Hive audience,” said Lindsaye Akhurst, manager of the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, “by offering one of our 2020 rescues to name. That way they can continue to support the Centre, by following their journey through rehabilitation, until their eventual release in the fall. So, get your name ideas ready DH readers!”

When we collectively conceived of and launched this unique campaign to “Save our Seals,” only two days ago, we hoped that adoptions and the ability to name a seal would resonate with all of you. But we were overwhelmed by the response.

As of yesterday afternoon, more than 900 seal adoptions have occurred and 46 seals have been named.

Although this animal hospital located near Crab Park in downtown Vancouver may be saved, we still encourage you to continue to support Ocean Wise’s continued care of rescued marine animals at the Rescue Centre and Vancouver Aquarium by adopting newly rescued seal pups, as they arrive at the reopened Centre over the coming days and weeks. To learn of recent arrivals as they happen, and brighten your day with some amazing stories, follow the Centre on social.

And, there are still 34 seal pups remaining to be named! So, if you (or your friends, family or colleagues as a team) were wanting to name a seal pup, receive regular updates on their journey, and participate in their eventual release back into the wild, now’s your chance!

I’m proud to say that, thanks to the Centre and Ocean Wise, the Daily Hive Team also has a seal to name — and we will introduce you to the newest addition to our team next week!

2020 has been a tough year. But through it all, I could not be more proud of the heart displayed by our Daily Hive Team.

A team that held true to our commitment to the communities in which we operate, by opening our social advertising doors wide to small businesses across Canada, despite our business being impacted by COVID-19 alongside everyone else’s. An offering that was taken up by over 650 small businesses, and resulted in over $1 million in advertising value going into supporting those businesses, their staff and their families.

And a team that today helped save over a hundred ocean animals in distress, and kept a Centre that has been open for 60 years around, hopefully, for many years and decades to come.

Thank you again to all who donated to the Centre or spread the word of their urgent need. Thank you for helping us #SaveOurSealsDH!

You all showed what it means to come together as a community to support an amazing cause. And, again, we thank you!
