This week in food: Toronto restaurant openings, closings, and our top picks

Feb 20 2020, 9:37 pm

This round-up spotlights the newest Toronto restaurant openings, bar openings, and upcoming closings, plus some special spots that should be on your radar.

Here’s what’s up in the city’s food scene right now.

Just Opened

  • Enoteca Sociale has officially reopened after a brief hiatus, and the spot is serving up a new look, new menu offerings, and more. Visit them at 1288 Dundas Street West.
  • Meat & Pie Co celebrated its grand opening at 212 King Street West this week. Get there for some good grub.
  • Bar Superfresh is now open at the Annex Food Hall; all the better to wash down your tacos, bao, and pasta with.
  • Vegandale Brewery, previously located at 1346 Queen Street West, has shuttered. But, lickety-split quick, the spot has reopened with a new name across the street at 1265 Queen West. That’s where vegan resto-bar Mythology was housed, but shuttered mere months after a major renovation. The new location is called Bar Vegandale, and offers eats by Doomies — the address’s original vegan eatery. Did you get all that?

Opening Soon

  • Ikkousha Ramen Chicken will be opening its first Toronto location on February 22, and the spot is celebrating with a free ramen giveaway.
  • Plant-powered favourite Fresh is opening up a location at Sherway Gardens.
  • It looks like Sam James Coffee Bar is opening up a Parkdale location. To that, Matty Matheson says: “This is nice.”
  • Don’s Restaurant, from the folks behind Sagra di Toronto and the food and beverage at East Room, will be opening up this year. ‘Til then, perhaps the city will be lucky enough to see another fried chicken pop-up?
  • Plant-based restaurant Dalpak, by former Parallel chef Tomer Markovitz, is coming to 820 St. Clair West this spring.
  • Osteria Giuleria is coming soon, from the folks behind l’Unita.
  • South Indian Dosa Mahal is gearing up to reopen on Bloor, replacing Zocalo and neighbouring Sugo at 1285 Bloor West, just down the street from the original location.

To celebrate the grand opening of its first Toronto location, this spot will be offering its first 50 customers bowls of steamy noodle soup, all for free. The giveaway will begin at noon, and if you want in on the goodness, get there early. But honestly, even if you miss out on the freebies, you can enjoy 50% off bowls all day long, which is perfect because it’s high time to indulge in some cozy comfort food.

A Second Harvest partner, the restaurant is already making a positive impact on the community, hosting guests from Dixon Hall’s Food Access and Housing Support Workers program, and Covenant House’s Transitional Housing Program and Culinary Training Program, with the intention of “giving back.” In the coming weeks, the restaurant will also be introducing the city’s first non-alcoholic bar. Overall: Good things are happening here.

Last Call

It’s coming up to closing time for these establishments. You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.

  • Vegandale Brewery is closed, but the spot has been recreated with the new name “Bar Vegandale” just across the street.
