A Toronto man was charged $18,000 for a single Uber ride
Anyone that’s ordered an Uber on Friday or Saturday night understands that they might have to deal with surge pricing.
But seriously, you wouldĀ neverĀ expect you would receive a bill for $18,518 for a 20-minute Uber ride.
And yes, as insane as that sounds, it happened to an Uber customer in Toronto this past Friday night following his 5.6 km Uber ride from The Entertainment District to St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Following the incident, the frustrated customer shared a screenshot of his Uber bill on Instagram, where it was then shared on Twitter by the customer’s friend Emily Kennard.
Kennard mentioned in her Tweet that Uber was “sticking to it”.
My friend was charged 18K for a 20 Min ride (!), and they are sticking to it. What in the world??? This is insane! @Uber_Support @badassboz @Uber pic.twitter.com/RjFihVLKIC

The Uber customer, Hisham Salama, was able to get Uber’s attention and he shared his conversationĀ he’d been having with Uber Support through the app on Twitter on Saturday morning. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the response he was hoping to receive.
@Uber @Uber_Support what turned out to be an honest mistake is now turning into the biggest blunder of 2017. Iām no longer laughing at wondering when #uber will get their act together. Can anyone help? Obviously, no 20 min fare is $18,500. pic.twitter.com/zBhtMSBy67

The Uber representative replied with, “It looks like the destination of drop off wasn’t the destination initially entered in the app when the trip was requested,” in response to why the user had been charged more than $18K for what should have easily been a $12-$20 trip.
According to multiple outlets, the ridesharing service said the massive charge was simply “an error”.
With the holidays and New Year’s Eve coming up, let’s hope that something like this doesn’t happen again.
