A food truck drive-thru is coming to Toronto for Father's Day weekend

Jun 11 2020, 4:51 pm

Just days after food trucks and street vendors were given the green light to start serving Torontonians again, plans for a funky Father’s Day weekend event have been announced.

Street Eats Market, self-described as the only food truck drive-thru event approved to open in Ontario, will be landing at Yorkdale Shopping Centre’s north parking lot next weekend.

Running on June 19 and 20 from noon to 8 pm, the event will operate with a virtual component, offering visitors the chance to order their goods ahead of time and schedule pickups. The website for preorders will go live on June 15.

Organizers say that the event itself has been in the works for months, and actually played a role in getting the reopening of food trucks approved by city officials. The goal is for this format to translate to other food festivals and events throughout the province.

Here’s how the event will run: orders will be placed and paid for online ahead time, and patrons will choose from a selection of 15-minute timeslots for pickup. License plate numbers of vehicles used for pickups will be entered online, in order to identify pickup orders on the days of the event.

On June 19 and 20, drivers can head to the location and lane number specified on their order receipt and, during the appropriate timeslot, orders will be placed on high tables beside vehicles to be retrieved.

From there, guests can head to the nearest exit and find a spot to enjoy their grub. Eating on the premises is not currently permitted by public health, organizers say, and gatherings or tailgating won’t be allowed.

If you’ve been missing some of the city’s most popular summertime favourites, now’s your chance to fill up. This event will feature classic’s likeĀ Evaā€™s Original Chimneys, Jerk Brothers, Beaver Tails, Choco Churros, Meltwich, The Holy Grill, Johnny Roccoā€™s Pizza Wagon, and more.

As each region moves into Phase 2, there’s a chance that public health could permit the roll-out of vendors from pop-up tents as well. If that occurs, new spots will be added to the lineup.

The event is operating as a fundraiser, and 100% of donations will go to Baycrest Hospital onĀ behalf of Yorkdale Shopping Centre and Street Eats Market.

In the future, the event plans to pop up in Kitchener, Oshawa, and Newmarket, with even more locations in the works.
