Starbucks unveils plans for first sustainably constructed cafe in Canada
Some big news for Starbucks fans, and no, we’re not talking about some exciting new holiday beverages (although, we wouldn’t be mad about it).
This announcement isn’t exactly something you can sip on. The brand has unveiled plans for a first-of-its-kind sustainable made cafe slated to open in Abbotsford, BC.
The new drive-thru location, constructed by Vancouver-based green building company Nexii, was built in just six days using an offsite precision-manufacturing process.

Starbucks’ new cafe created “near-zero construction waste,” according to a release from the coffee giant.
The building was designed to reduce energy needs for heating and cooling compared to standard construction builds and is slated to open in early 2021.

This is a step forward in the company’s goals to operate more eco-friendly stores, specifically, Starbucks has set ambitious sustainability targets to cut its carbon, water, and waste footprints in half by 2030.
“Buildings and construction can have a substantial impact on Canada’s environmental goals,” says Catherine Anderson, vice president of Store Development at Starbucks Canada.
“Working with like-minded innovators like Nexii, we are excited to lead the industry in modelling the benefits of green construction and share what we learn with others to help action meaningful, global change.”
