Today, Toronto will be home to what organizers are calling a “first-of-its-kind” refugee hiring event, featuring a list of top Canadian employers eager to hire newcomers to the nation.
Starbucks Canada, together with the Tent Partnership for Refugees, is hosting the event at the Toronto Metro Hall Rotunda from 9:30 am until 2 pm.
The event’s purpose is to connect employers with motivated newcomers to Canada. It quickly reached capacity at 550 refugee candidates, and has a waiting list of employers.
Mayor John Tory and Senator Ratna Omidvar are both on-site, showing their support for the event.
15 employers are here right now to provide meaningful + permanent jobs to refugees. They are sending a strong message to other employers about the #value of refugee talent in their own workplaces. https://t.co/wj2uVSHYx8 @TentOrg @#cdnimm #cdnpoli #hirerefugees #refugeeswork

“Hiring refugees is not only a good thing to do but it makes economic sense. Refugees are smart, determined, and loyal,” said Senator Ratna Omidvar, who heads the Refugee Jobs Agenda Roundtable, the convening body that was integral to bringing together the service providers and other employers that are participating in this event.
“The Refugee Hiring Event is a great initiative that will further bring refugees, service providers, and enthusiastic employers together so that 100 qualified refugees are hired on the spot.”
