A new, national non-profit organization known as POST has been created for businesses to train and educate employees, and to help consumers feel confident that a business is doing their part to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Participating businesses will be provided with the POST Promise logo which is a clear way to show that they’re taking necessary precautions. And according to the organization, the more businesses and workplaces that adopt the use of the POST Promise logo, the more recognizable it will become to the general public, thus increasing consumer confidence.

On its website, POST (People Outside Safely Together), states that the POST Promise is a “self-declaration” that a business is working to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. “The POST Promise is a training and education platform which results in a voluntary declaration from a business to its customers and employees,” the organization states. “It’s a simple and easy way to show that a business is taking steps to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

Once completed, a business is provided with the necessary communication and implementation tools to educate employees on the five key steps to workplace safety, which were created to be consistent with what has been recommended by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

POST also received recognition from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, during a recent press conference.

“Our government is partnering with the private sector – including the Business Council of Canada – on their POST program,” he said. “This initiative calls on businesses to commit to five key public health measures.”

These measures include:

  1. Maintain physical distancing.
    • Keeping a distance of at least two meters is the recommended distance.
  2. Stay home if unwell
    • Self monitor for symptoms such as cough, fever, difficulty breathing
  3. Practice respiratory etiquette.
    • Cough or sneeze into the bend of your arm, or wear a face mask when social distancing is not possible.
  4. Clean and disinfect regularly
  5. Wash and sanitize hands
    • Wash hands for at least 20 seconds

Trudeau also encouraged all business owners, “whether you have a restaurant, a tech startup, or a boutique to join in, today.”

Businesses who make the promise will be able to use and prominently display the POST Promise logo which is a nationally recognized symbol of a business’ commitment to doing their part to protect their customers’ and employees’ health and safety as COVID-19 restrictions ease.

Participating business can also purchase a kit which will include additional communication tools like window decals, posters and tent cards which can be used to further build awareness of their commitment within their place of business.

How can businesses participate?

Businesses can participate through the POST online portal, which includes an online training and education process, combined with a promise to implement the five key steps to workplace safety.

Once completed, a business is provided with the necessary tools to educate employees on the five key steps to workplace safety. Businesses are also able to display the POST Promise logo in a prominent location to make customers aware of the commitment that has been made.

The organization notes that it is not  “certification” or “approval” from any regulatory body, and that all businesses are still required to follow the laws and recommended guidelines from their local public health office and government bodies.

Currently, organizations and associations representing more than 100,000 businesses across Canada have already endorsed the POST Promise.

These partners include the Business Council of Canada, Retail Council of Canada, Restaurants of Canada, the Building Owners and Managers Association, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, the Canadian Global Cities Council, Medcan, Labatt, and SALT XC.
