Georges Laraque responds to National Post mixing up retired black NHL players

The National Post is blaming a “misattribution” in its wire service, after tweeting a photo meant to accompany a story about former player Donald Brashear.

The tweet referred to a story that first appeared in Le Journal de Quebec, which reported Brashear is now apparently working at a Tim Hortons in Quebec.

However, it was the photo that accompanied the tweet that quickly became the topic of conversation — as it was not Brashear in the photo, but rather another retired NHLer: Georges Laraque.

Social media users were quick to point out the mix-up.

Among those who called out the paper for its mistake was Laraque himself.

In the end, the National Post apologized on Twitter, blaming the mix-up on “a mistake in the photo’s caption for our wire service.”

During his career, Laraque played 695 NHL games, including two seasons with the Montreal Canadiens.

He also suited up and played for the Edmonton Oilers, Phoenix Coyotes, and Pittsburgh Penguins.

He retired after the 2009-10 season.

During Brashear’s career, he played 1,025 NHL games, including parts of four seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. He also played for Vancouver Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals, and New York Rangers.

He last played in the NHL during the 2009-10 season.
