Brampton man charged with attempted murder of missing 5-year-old boy

Peel Regional Police have arrested a 28-year-old man for the attempted murder of a 5-year-old boy who went missing from his home in Brampton on July 19.

The suspect has been identified as Dyon Smart of Brampton. Police say Smart was known to the child and the mother.

Police received reports of the missing child at approximately 6 am and were advised he was last seen at 2 am. The boy was located at 6:59 am by a K9 officer near train tracks close to his home.

Police say the boy was found “unconscious and showed signs of physical trauma.”

The victim was transported to the hospital and he is stable but suffering from “life-threatening” injuries.

Smart has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, fail to comply with recognizance and breach of probation order.

He will appear at the Brampton Court of Justice for a bail hearing on July 19.
