Learn the art of BBQ with two online classes happening this weekend

Oct 13 2020, 5:48 pm

Jack’s BBQ is letting the adults in on the learning by creating its own online series of BBQ classes.

This Sunday, BBQ fanatics can join Jack and Pitmaster Joe Whalen for two terrific classes that explore the magical world of smoke and meat.

Both courses will be held virtually: one is an overview of BBQ principles, while the other is a hands-on course that will have you enjoying your own smoked meat at home.

The two courses available are BBQ 101 and BBQ 202.

BBQ 101 will provide an Overview of Basic BBQ principles. Jack and Joe will talk about all the meats they cook at Jack’s BBQ, including brisket, pork ribs, sausage, chicken and pulled pork. They will also give an overview of the technology of smoking, do demonstrations, and answer questions from attendees during a live session held via Zoom. The class runs from 4 to 5 pm and costs $39.

BBQ 202 is all about learning the Secrets of Smoked Brisket. Class runs from 5:30 to 7 pm and covers the following topics:

  • The history of Central Texas smoked meats
  • Rubs, brines, sauces, and injections
  • How to trim a brisket
  • Different cooking techniques
  • How to “feel” for doneness
  • How to hold and how to slice brisket
  • How to smoke a cocktail

The BBQ 202 class is $95 and includes the following items that need to be picked up prior to the session at Jack’s BBQ SoDo location: vacuum-sealed smoked meats, Jack’s BBQ chef apron, and Jack’s BBQ spice rubs and sauces.

Tickets can be purchased for either class via Eventbrite using these links: BBQ 101 and BBQ 202.
