What to eat in Portland today: St. Honoré Bakery's Kouign-Amann

May 28 2020, 10:06 pm

Ask anyone you know, and there’s a strong chance that they have a hard time passing up the perfect pastry. Thanks to modern sensibilities, a youthful drive, and an increase in culinary interest, most cities have access to bakeries of all types.

Portland, with its vast array of cuisines, is home to some of the best bakeries in the country — maybe even the world. These shops bring treats and delights from all corners of this globe and batch-bakes them to perfection for our enjoyment.

One such place is the heavenly St. Honoré.

With three locations in Portland city proper, and a lone Lake Oswego spot just a short drive away, this is inarguably one of the best baked-goods experiences you’re bound to have in or around our delicious state.

What to order

Though St. Honoré does a fantastic job of supplying party orders and special treats, their standing menu is absolutely wonderful. Anything on this long list (including their croissants, chouquettes, tartes, and more) is worth the trip alone.

However, there isn’t another place in the United States that can make a kouign-amann quite like St. Honoré Bakery. Pronounced “queen-ah-mahn,” this fluffy, flakey, sweet, and salty French pastry is one of the greatest treats on Earth, and we’re fortunate enough to have a group of folks in our neighborhood that can whip up some to perfection.
