A large black bear wandered into Ottawa's ByWard Market this morning

The Ottawa police have had a bit of an unusual start to their morning, as a rather large black bear is currently on the loose in the ByWard Market.

Police began dealing with the curious black bear around 3 am and have since blocked off the area of Dalhousie and Murray as they attempt to tranquilize the bear and move it to safety.

Officers are asking people to avoid the area, so traffic doesn’t get “grizzly.”

Police say conservation officers from the National Capital Commission are on the scene trying to tranquillize the animal.

Social media was buzzing about the unusual story, and shortly after the bear was spotted someone created a Twitter handle for the bear, which already has over 1,000 followers.

It remains unclear where the animal came from, as the area is primarily home to bars and restaurants.
