What happens when you put the first big snowfall of the year, lots of free time, and a snowman-building contest together in Montreal? A lot of original creations throughout the city.

On January 18, the city of Montreal announced it would be hosting the winter-long Concours bonhommes de neige, challenging residents to go out and decorate their neighbourhoods. Only a week later, the competition is already getting fierce.

What can we say, snow-building is a quintessential Canadian activity.

Whether it’s in their backyards, on the sidewalks, or in public parks, some of Montreal’s most creative individuals have taken on some impressive snowman-building projects, and people have been quick to show off these sculptures all over Instagram.

Check out some of the biggest snowmen (snow creatures?) in the city. If these inspire you to set forth and assemble your own masterpieces, don’t forget to tag us and use the hashtag #dailyhivemtl on your social media showcase.
