Today, April 18, is actually Thursday but it’s dressed as a Friday. As we settle into the long Easter weekend, here are five happenings around the city today to get your three-day weekend started off in style.

Cirque Du Soleil: Alegria

The world-renowned Cirque du Soleil production is returning home tonight.

Alegria, which was first performed by Cirque in 1994, stole the eyes and ears of more than 14 million spectators. Performed under a traditional Big Top tent, the show made its way to 255 different cities over 19 years of touring, until its last performance in 2013.

The show mixes the high energy acrobatics which Cirque du Soleil is famous for with a “rallying theme for change, hope, and optimistic renewal.” The cast is made up of more than 50 performers and musicians, all renowned internationally for their craft.

Shop & Wine

The first edition of “Shop & Wine” is happening tonight. It’s the perfection oppurtunity to do exactly what the name implies, drink and shop (in whatever order).

There’s a 20% discount on all of the event’s plant workshop, perfect to nab something to spruce up your apartment, house, or porch for the springtime.

Guests will also be eligible to receive a gift basket from Maison Berger Paris.

21 Swings

Spring won’t be the only thing in the air as Montreal’s musical swing exhibition has returned to the Quartier des Spectacles.

The interactive, music art installation, 21 Swings, will have Montrealers feeling like kids again as guests can swing back and forth, creating musical melodies.

The 21 Swings (or Balançoires) installation was custom-made for the Promenade des Artistes in the Quartier des Spectacles. The work was created by Daily tous les jours, in collaboration with animal behaviourist Luc-Alain Giraldeau from UQAM and Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, the installation’s composer.

The Horrifically Real Virtuality at Centre Phi

A collective immersive experience combining virtual reality, cinema and interactivity by filmmaker Ed Wood.

The event allows viewers to watch the film in a virtual environment while interacting physically and in real time with characters and material objects.

Montreal Botanical Garden – Butterflies Go Free

The Montreal Botanical Garden’s annual “Butterflies Go Free” exhibit has returned for another year.

The 22nd edition of the butterfly festival features “thousands of multicoloured butterflies who will be flitting about in an exceptionally lush natural setting,” as per the Montreal Botanical Garden.

Get a chance to see butterfly’s shimmering colours up close in a humid, tropical oasis, not to mention ample gorgeous photo opportunities.
