Even with the Habs toeing the line of making the NHL playoffs and the fact that we don’t have a Major League Baseball team (yet), Montreal has still been recognized as the best Canadian city when it comes to sports.

The ranking comes from the Global Sport Impact Index, which aims to asses the performance of cities that host national and international sports events.

“We are delighted that Montreal has ranked first for two consecutive years. Sports tourism is one of the fastest growing tourism segments in Canada and around the world,” says Yves Lalumière, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal.”Tourisme Montréal will continue its efforts to build the city’s roster of events in order to maximize Montreal’s full potential. We recognize that major championships offer great visibility for the destination and generate lasting economic, tourism and media benefits.”

As part of the Montreal Sports Event Strategy, Tourisme Montréal aims to attract major sports events by working closely with its local partners, which include the City of Montréal, Excellence sportive de l’île de Montréal (ESIM), the Olympic Park, Parc Jean-Drapeau and the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ).

Together, they position our city as an Olympic city and a top-tier destination for a variety of sports.

Despite only having a one franchise in the Big Four sports leagues, Montreal is home to the Alouettes and Impact, and also hosts an impressive array of world-recognized sporting events every year including the Grand Prix and the Rogers Cup, along with frequently-hosting the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

Tourisme Montreal has also just released its new “Sports Events Montréal” signature, according to the news release, which will be used to promote the city in the highly competitive international business travel market.

Montreal’s top ranking is probably why Youppi! has been looking so happy lately.
