Genie Bouchard's Super Bowl date bet is being made into a movie

More than two years after Genie Bouchard agreed to go on a date with a stranger from the internet, it appears someone wants to make a movie about the improbable story.

Online entertainment news outlet Deadline Hollywood reports that Fox 2000 has picked up the idea pitched by Jonathan A. Abrams, with Bouchard serving as executive producer.

“The film version centres on dating and love in the modern digital age, asking if a relationship born on social media can survive the glare of the public eye,” Amanda N’Duka reports.

Abrams also wrote the script for Diplomats, a film inspired by Dennis Rodman’s 2013 mission trip to North Korea, and has developed television dramas for A&E, FOX, ABC, NBC, and The CW.

This story began with a simple bet on Twitter during Super Bowl LI in 2017. The Atlanta Falcons had a commanding 28-3 lead over the New England Patriots in the third quarter, prompting the overconfident Canadian tennis star to gloat, tweeting: “I knew Atlanta would win btw.”

That’s when an opportunistic university student from Chicago decided to shoot his shot.

“If Patriots win, we go on a date?”

Despite not knowing anything about the person posing the question – he didn’t have a profile photo of himself or his real name on his account – Genie replied “sure.”

The rest is history.

The Patriots staged the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history, and the 2014 Wimbledon finalist owed this mystery person a date.

Genie honoured it, flying 20-year-old John Goehrke to New York 10 days later while she was in town for her debut in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. The pair attended a Brooklyn Nets game, sitting courtside.

They actually appeared to make a cute couple too, seemingly enjoying each other’s company. Just two years younger than Genie, John was age-appropriate too.

“He’s normal!” the Montreal native exclaimed with delight in more than one interview.

When cornered by TMZ, Bouchard even agreed to a second date. And if you thought that was just lip service, you were wrong.

While there has not been any confirmation that the two are romantically involved, Genie and John have hung out together a few times since their first date.

They were pictured together in December 2017, and went to the Super Bowl together as guests of the NFL in February 2018.
