Italy’s Civil Protections Department announced on Saturday, March 21 that the country has seen 793 COVID-19-related deaths in the past 24 hours.

This is the largest single-day rise in death count for the country, which has been among the hardest hit by the global pandemic.

As of the 6 pm update, Italy has seen a total of 53,578 cases — an increase of 6,557 compared to the previous day’s update.

However, removing the number of deaths and recovered cases leaves the country at a total of 42,681 active cases.

Italy also saw 943 cases recovered in that same amount of time, offering some hope of the recovery still to come as the country remains on lock-down.

There has been a total of 4,825 deaths and 6,072 cases recovered in Italy to date.
