Earlier this year, Shoppers Drug Mart entered into several cannabis supply agreements with licensed producers across the country, including Aphria, Aurora, and Tilray.

The supply agreements were conditional on Shoppers receiving its LP approval under the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR).

Last Friday, Health Canada issued the licensing approval, which Daily Hive confirmed with Shoppers’ parent company Loblaw Companies Ltd.

“Shoppers Drug Mart has received Health Canada’s approval to be a Licensed Producer in accordance with the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations,” wrote a Loblaw representative.

“As trusted medication experts, we believe pharmacists have an important role to play in the safe and informed use of medical cannabis, and this is the first step in our journey to provide medical cannabis to our patients.”

The rep also noted that more information will be made available in the coming weeks.

Shoppers Drug Mart announced a partnership with Manulife Financial this summer, for a medical cannabis program launching in the fall.

The partnership will offer customers who have been approved for medical cannabis coverage support from Shoppers Drug Mart specially trained pharmacists who will advise on strain-types and consumption.

Cannabis will not be available onsite, in accordance with ACMPR regulations. Consumers will a prescription will receive their cannabis via home delivery after purchasing online or over the phone.
