Edmonton Oilers planning to get McDavid back from injury this week: report

The Edmonton Oilers may be getting some good news over the next few days regarding Connor McDavid.

Injuries have plagued the top of Edmonton’s roster over the last few weeks with both McDavid and Leon Draisaitl going down. Draisaitl was able to return to the Oilers lineup for a few games but suffered another injury against the San Jose Sharks last week.

Now, according to a new report from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on Saturday Headlines, it looks like the Oilers captain is aiming for a return to action sometime this week.

“I think the word is mid-to-late next week was the target [for McDavid’s return],” Friedman reported on Saturday night. “You know he wants to come back as quick as possible… he looks good.”

McDavid suffered a lower-body injury last month after an awkward collision with Winnipeg Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey. Despite not being expected to play on this California road trip, the Oilers captain did make the trip with the rest of the team. McDavid has been a regular participant in practice and has looked good on the ice.

The 28-year-old superstar has missed Edmonton’s last seven games, during which the Oilers put up a surprisingly decent 4-3-0 record in McDavid’s absence.

However, Edmonton did drop a very important game against the LA Kings on Saturday afternoon and did not look like their usual offensive selves without McDavid or Draisaitl in the lineup. These injuries could have cost the Oilers home-ice advantage in the playoffs as they are now four points back of the Kings for second place in the Pacific with just six games left on the schedule.

This new timeline would peg his return for either Wednesday against the St. Louis Blues or Friday versus the Sharks.

It’s been a bit of a down season for McDavid, and he may be in a tough spot to hit the 100-point plateau, which would be just the third time he has failed to do so and first since the 2019-20 season, which saw him notch 97 points.
